Kayaking & Canoe Polo

Our open section is currently full but we have availability for girls and boys aged 12-16 and Women and girls aged 16+.

We are a new club based in Swansea with sessions at Penlan, Pontardawe and Ystradgynlais.

If you’re interested in other disciplines like White Water and Surf, we have close ties with Tawe Kayak Club who offer these disciplines, if you take our beginners course you will learn the same skills needed for all disciplines.

We have sessions at Pontardawe, Penlan and Ystradgynlais. Our beginners courses run at all three sessions.

We have mixed open (age 14+) girls and boys (age 12-16) and women & girls (age 16+) sections in our club.

All ages are welcome when we have capacity, our members are aged from 12 to 60+.

Our beginners course costs £65 and includes six sessions and membership to Canoe Wales.

Sessions cost £8 for children and club members, or £10 for non members.

To join the club, it’s £35/year for Under 18’s and £40/year for adults – family discounts are available.

If you new to kayaking, you can join one of our beginners courses which costs £65 and includes 6 weeks of kayaking lessons at Penlan Leisure Centre, Pontardawe Swimming Pool or Ystradgynlais Sports Centre (or a combination of the three!) with all the gear you need provided.

You’ll learn all the basic kayaking skills which are relevant to all kayaking disciplines including Canoe Polo, White Water, Sea Kayaking and Slalom. At the end of the course you can choose to join Swansea Canoe Polo Club if you want to continue Canoe Polo and/or Tawe Kayak Club for general kayaking, canoeing and white water. We can also recommend other clubs nearby for you to join if you’d like to pursue other disciplines such as Slalom and Kayak Cross.

There will be a focus on Canoe Polo while you learn. Canoe Polo is a great discipline to practice your skills in a fun and enjoyable way, if at the end of the course you don’t fancy continuing with Canoe Polo, you will have all of the necessary skills for any other kayaking discipline.

You are welcome to come and give it a go, or watch a session before you decide if you want to take the course.

Register using the button below and we will be in touch. If you have any questions or want to chat you can message us on Facebook or call/Whatsapp 01792 823488.

All of the kayaking equipment needed will be provided including kayak, paddle, helmet, spraydeck and buoyancy aid.

Most of our members wear a swimming costume / shorts with a t-shirt or rash vest.

Canoe Polo is a team sport where two teams of five kayakers compete against each other to score a goal in their opponents goal which is suspended 2 meters above the water. It shares similarities with rugby, basketball and netball.

There are tournaments for women, youth and open categories with regional, national and international competitions.

Scroll to the bottom of this page and you’ll find an intro video!

Courses start when there is sufficient interest and capacity. If you’re interested – get in touch and we’ll see which session/sessions work best for you.

Yes you can – you’ll be learning the same skills but the sessions you attend would be limited to Ystradgynlais and Penlan when instructors are available with Tawe Kayak Club.

You can call or whatsapp 01792 823488, email contact@swanseacanoepolo.club, or message us on Facebook or Instagram.

Youth, Womens & Mixed Open Teams

Canoe Polo is an inclusive sport with mixed teams. Our Youth team is open to members aged 12 and above, and our womens team is open to members aged 14 and above. Most of our members are between 12 and 40 years old, some have been paddling all of their lives and many have only recently started.

Here’s a few clips from Tamzin’s point of view (age 13), who is a member of our Youth, Women’s and Open teams.

And here’s some footage from the poolside of us practising zone kills at our Pontardawe session.
